Paul Wellstone Seaman’s Scarf Knitting Instructions

Here is the design of the Paul Wellstone Seaman’s Scarf

Use a circular needle when knitting a Seamen’s scarf, knitting back and forth on the circular needle.B4 stands for the four stitch, seed stitch, side borders.

When working the tails, but not when working the neckline ribbing, I use the chain selvedge, which is accomplished by : (a) putting the yarn to the front of your right needle; (b) inserting, as if to purl, your right needle into the first stitch on your left needle; (c) slipping the needle off your left needle and on to your right needle; and (d) putting the yarn to the back of your work.

So, B4, at the beginning of a row is: Sl1 (as explained above), k1, p1, k1.

B4 at the end of a row is: k1, p1, k2.

Here goes:

Using  a provisional cast-on, cast on 45 stitches.

Work the neckline ribbing as follows:

Row 1: (K4, p4) two times, k4, p5, k4, (p4, k4) two times. [45 sts]

Row 2:  (P4, k4) two times, p4, k5, p4, (k4, p4) two times. [45 sts]

Repeat rows 1 and 2, ending after working row 2.

Work the ribbing until the length desired, approximately 70% of the neckline measurement of the person for whom the scarf is being made.  For myself, I usually make the ribbing about 10 inches; for a man, I usually make the ribbing about 12 inches.

Remove the provisional cast-on and begin the tails, working both tails at the same time.

Rows 1 & 3:  B4, [p1, (k2, p2) two times, k1, (p2, k2) two times] two times, p1, B4. [45 sts]

Rows 2 & 4:  Work in established pattern, which is B4, k1, [(p2, k2) two times, p1, (k2, p2) two times, k1] two times, B4. [45 sts]

Rows 5 & 7: B4, [(p2, k2) two times, p3, k2, p2, k2, p1] two times, p1, B4. [45 sts]

Rows 6 & 8: Work in established pattern, which is B4, k1, [k1, p2, k2, p2, k3, (p2, k2) two times] two times, B4. [45 sts]

Rows 9 & 11:  B4, [k1, (p2, k2) two times, p1, (k,2, p2,) two times] two times, k1, B4. [45 sts]

Rows 10 & 12: Work in establihsed pattern, which is B4, p1, [(k2, p2) two times, k1, (p2, k2) two times, p1] two times, B4. [45 sts]

Rows 13 & 15:  B4, [(k2, p2) two times, k3, p2, k2, p2, k1] two times, k1, B4. [45 sts]

Rows 12 & 16:  Work in estalbihsed pattern, which is B4, p1, [p1, k2, p2, k2, p3, (k2, p2) two times, two times, B4. [45 sts]

Work rows 1 – 16 until the scarf is the length desired.

Work five rows of seed stitch border worked as: Sl1, (k1, p1) 21 times, k2.

Bind off, using your favorite bind-off.
